You’re going to need a lot of Marvin Gaye music to make this Hono Electrical Candle look sexy, but maybe in a really dark room it may have some odd appeal. Touch the candle with the included “magic match,” and it lights up, then when you’re done, blow it out just like a real candle. The rechargeable candle includes a battery charger, a circular stand, and a holder that makes the candle appear to be standing on its own.

Ever find yourself in [undefined country] and run out of bottled water to drink? Use the SteriPEN Water Purifier to kill bacteria, viruses and protozoa without using chemicals or boiling. Simply stir for less than a minute and the water’s safe to drink. We wonder how the [undefined country residents] can drink their water every day. They must have guts of steel.

The iPod Concerto Table is for those rich but untalented folk who like pianos but have no idea how to play them. This design concept by Lovegrove and Respucci, displayed at one of the Apple stores in New York (not The One on Fifth Avenue) last weekend, is shaped like a piano and has a dock for your iPod and a couple of amplified speakers flush-mounted underneath the lid. It’s multifunctional, too, where you can use it as a desk and when you’re done, stash your laptop underneath that lid.

Sorry Apple, looks like this time you’re the one copying Microsoft. Your iPod Sport Kit? Microsoft Research did it already. The MPTrain is a personal trainer using both hardware and software to do pretty much the same thing your Sport Kit does. The cellphone interface keeps track of your speed, distance, workout time, heart-rate, and calories burned. It can even select music with different attributes to make the user speed up or slow down, depending on their current exercise regime. We know, we know, Microsoft’s solution is more technical and less user friendly than the iPod and Nike product. That’s your whole schtick, to make technology easier to use. But we’re just pointing out that Microsoft got there first, and you just made it better. There’s room for both of you after all.

Looking for an MP3 player and you are open to units other than the iPod? I doubt any of these units will be iPod killers (that silly term their marketing departments continue to use), but they do offer a lot of features not (yet) found on an iPod. As we said before, individually there is no such thing as an iPod killer, but together these players can slowly chip away at Apple's market share. That's making the assumption that the iPod's ability to sell three out of every four players is not sustainable. iTunes does lock a lot of users into Apple's DRM format, so it may be a really slow chipping away.

SmartDisk, not to be confused with its rival DumbDisk, is releasing the FireLite XPress series of hard drives in June. Now, what does this mean and why should you care? Primarily, the palm-sized hard drive features an LCD on the front that displays that unit’s remaining capacity even when it’s not plugged in. Yes, quite revolutionary indeed. SmartDisk will release the drive with two capacities, a 60GB version fro $199 and a 120GB version for $299, both compatible with Windows XP and Mac OS X right out of the box. Whether or not the LCD justifies that sort of price tag remains to be seen, but rest assured that at least you’ll always be aware of how much space you have left for "Linux distros," since that’s what you torrent all day long.

You may be shocked not to find an iPod on the list below. Well, here comes some more shocking news. The iRiver Clix, thanks to its excellent compatibility with the revamped Windows Media Player 11 and MTV Urge music service, joins the party this week. Yup: no iPod, no iTunes...and no doubt about it. Oh, and the Windows Treo shouldn't get comfy, because the Treo 700p looks mighty promising. Mighty promising indeed.

The USB Insulated Cooler and Warmer. So who said USB wasn’t versatile enough? Stick a can in there, press the cool button and get a fridge effect. Or shove a coffee cup in and press hot and get it toasty warm. Apparently it’s all powered through the USB port too, which is nothing short of miraculous. And all for around $50.00

The USB Rock Star looks enough like Elvis to appeal to fans and enough not like Elvis to skirt licensing requirements, but he will rock your cubicle like a hurricane. If you truly want to get back at your coworkers, plug the USB Rock Star into your systems USB port and crank up the Britney Spears. The little Elvis like man will gyrate and dance in time to your music and generally annoy everyone in proximity to you. Compatible with Windows XP and uses Windows Media player. Their concept is quite simple: reduce the repetitive and arduous task of moving your hand from keyboard to mouse and back again a few thousand times a day. They accomplish that by splitting the keyboard and making the right half into a full fledged mouse. Your merely switch up your grip and the mouse function automatically springs into action. You might look a bit dorky in the act, and it surely won't work for everybody, but it seems to us that a spreadsheet pusher could quickly get used to the setup and learn to rock it. The creators of the Combimouse have recently completed their final prototype and are on the lookout for a manufacturer.

Ever want to spend $5,000 to be able to use an ancient technology to create an effect that hasn’t been cool for 10 years? This will do it. The Horseman 3D is a non-digital camera that will create 3D images. No, this isn’t a new age 3D, it is the same damn 3D that has the red and blue overlapping images and requires cheap glasses. So, what exactly do you do with Kota Nezu's Jellyfish Sonic, an audio system suspended on bug-like legs that resembles something out of a bad late-era sci-fi flick (we're not naming which), which happens to have a water reservoir and light projector in its belly? The Myson Aquavision Mirrored TV Towel Warmers even has (as the name suggests) a mirror - which means it can provide you with entertainment enough for a a long soak in tub, a mirror to see how wrinkled you've gotten once you've finished, and then a nice, warm towel to wrap around your pink and puckered self.

We'll sit on a good sofa over a great armchair any day, but we’d definitely make an exception for the Bibliochaise, literally an armchair library for those who like to be "immersed in deep reading". The Amadana Cooking Timer is available in white or black, and shows you little pieces falling down that kinda remind us of Tetris, but not exactly. This is more like an hourglass than Tetris, and when the variously-shaped blocks fill up the display, your time is up. The Flashbag is a USB flash drive that will inflate as it fills up with data. Now you may be asking why a gadget like this would be useful. Well, it really isn’t, but it is definitely cool and an innovative USB flash drive design, which is pretty rare nowadays. The Flashbag is only a concept right now but the designer, Dima Komissarov, has a patent pending on this device, so hopefully a company will pick it up soon. When swithched off the flashbag remains pumped up, so you can estimate with the naked eye how much more pics, books and music albums can be transferred into it.

The Connection Glass was born out of two things product designer Priscilla Bernikowicz realized about bars: 1) that they’re terrible places to meet people, because the noise prevents you from hearing what anyone is saying, and 2) that people clutch their glasses like security blankets. So the Connection Glass is kind of like Dodgeball except not on your cellphone, in that it tells you who is in your vicinity and lets you look at their profiles and send messages. You can exchange details with someone you find interesting by clinking your glasses together.

The Guinness Widget is a neat feat of engineering and it does pour a halfway decent pint from a can, compared to what you’d get from a keg at a pub, but if you live in the UK you have another option as of this month. The Guinness Surger is a electrical device with a small metal plate on it; you pour a little water onto the plate, put a pint of the special Guinness Draught Surger Beer in place and then turn the power on, sending ultrasonic pulses up through the beer to create the creamy head we all know and love. If that sounds incredible, you really need to watch the video and see it in action, it really is amazing to see in action.

So we managed to get our hands on a Samsung Q1 / Origami device set to roll tomorrow here at CeBIT. Don't ask how, but it'll be awhile before we recover from the brutal caning we just received. From the five minutes we spent with it we can tell you, well, it’s an XP Tablet PC with a 7-inch display. Sorry, that’s about it, nothing earth-shattering here folks. In fact, for all the hype, it’s hard to find anything revolutionary or even evolutionary in the hardware specs or loaded software (perhaps that will come when the price is announced). Sure, Samsung did call it a prototype unit, but as the final prototype prior to manufacture we're told not much will change besides a "brighter TFT LCD."

Humans have been consuming coffee for 1200 years, the first coffee shops opened 500 years ago and coffee is the world’s second largest traded commodity, behind only oil. More than 1.5 billion cups of coffee are consumed every day with the US market for coffee machines at 20 million a year and growing. You’d think we would have already perfected the best way to produce a cup of coffee from coffee beans, but several years of research by Stanford University mechanical engineering lecturer Alan Adler (the inventor of the Aerobie flying disk which holds the world throwing record of more than a quarter mile) appear to have found a better coffee machine. Independent reviews suggest the new Aerobie AeroPress delivers the smoothest, richest, purest and fastest cup of coffee (under 30 seconds) you’re likely to find and the bonus is that the AeroPress costs just US$30

Many have tried to create power strip that performs allows you to use more than the inevitable two of the plugs at once, and many have failed. One notable exception is the PowerSquid, but this Swivel Socket concept seems like it might give that thing a run for its money. Each socket rotates 180 degrees, and each has a swiveling label so you can remember what you plugged into what.

The quest for ever smaller GPS-enabled equipment, such as mobile phones, PDAs and even watches has just taken a giant step forward with the development of the world’s smallest GPS radio frequency receiver module by a New Zealand company. Auckland electronics company Rakon has just developed a module, as tiny as a baby’s fingernail, and is already fielding calls from GPS manufacturers keen to imbed the product in their own new developments.

Trying to grab some goodness from companies like TomTom and Garmin, they’re showing what they call the Nav-U portable navigation system. It’s small and with the easy-to-use bracket, it won’t take me hours to figure out how to position it in my car. Kudos Sony. It’s also got a 3.5-inch touchscreen—another nice addition—and a two-way speaker system that makes sure your voice prompts don’t get lost on the way. The guts of the thing include a 12-channel GPS receiver with proprietary RF technology and a built in antenna that let you use the receiver the minute you pull it out of the box, as well as 1GB of flash memory preloaded with maps of the continental U.S. (and 1.6 million "points of interest", like the giant ball of string in Wisconsin you’ve been dying to see).

Ron Patrick wanted a VW Beetle with a jet engine (hey, who doesn't?). But he also wanted to be able to drive it on the open road, rather than just on a closed airport runway surrounded by fire engines and EMT crews. His solution? A dual-engine vehicle, with a normal VW motor for day-to-day transportation, and a GE T58-8F helicopter turboshaft engine converted to run as a jet, to get through rush-hour traffic
