An 'unbreakable' wine glass made of a new material called Kwarx has been launched at Vinexpo in Hong Kong. The makers claim it is the most important revolution in glass since automated lead crystal production. Philippe Durand, Chairman of ARC International, the company which developed the process, would only say 'Kwarx is a new material' but jealously guarded the actual formula.

What if you could power your house with sewage? Or run your pacemaker with blood sugar rather than a traditional battery? Scientists hope that microbial fuel cells -- devices that use bacteria to generate electricity -- could one day make this vision a reality. While typical fuel cells use hydrogen as fuel, separating out electrons to create electricity, bacteria can use a wide variety of nutrients as fuel. Some species, such as Shewanella oneidensis and Rhodoferax ferrireducens, turn these nutrients directly into electrons. Indeed, scientists have already created experimental microbial fuel cells that can run off glucose and sewage. Although these microscopic organisms are remarkably efficient at producing energy, they don't make enough of it for practical applications.

Mark Parker and Steve Jobs, CEOs of Nike and Apple, announced the first collaboration between the two companies. Nike Plus is a technology that allows runner’s shoes to communicate with their iPod Nanos. The Nike+iPod Sport kit consists of a small oval pod that you insert under the liner of your shoe (much like a SIM card), and a small transmitter that attaches to your Nano. The kit will cost $29. The software tracks the usual data like time and distance, and includes a voice over, much like the nav system in your car, which communicates the details. The training and inspiration mixes offer advice as well. Nike’s lined up Lance Armstrong and Paula Radcliffe (who holds the women’s marathon record) among others, to share their favorite music and provide their inspiration while you train.

The 2006 Web@Work Employee survey reveals that men are more likely than women to engage in personal web surfing at work. Almost two-thirds (65 percent) of men who access the internet from work admitted to accessing non work-related websites during work hours versus 58 percent of women. Similarly, men are more likely to spend more time on the internet at work for both work-related and non work-related tasks than women do. For example, men admit to spending 11.6 hours on average per week on work-related websites and 2.3 hours per week on non-work related websites. Besides the obvious pleasure kissing brings to so many, research shows this activity to be healthy, especially to those suffering from allergies. Thirty minutes of good uninterrupted face sucking, spit swapping or kissing if you prefer, is equivalent to a thirty-minute workout in the gym. Kissing not only has a calming effect and increases blood circulation; it also reduces histamines, the body's natural response to allergens and pollen.

t's been smooth cruising for the international luxury yacht industry of late. Following a few years in the doldrums, yacht orders were up 28.4 percent for 2005, according to Showboats International. While the current year's uptick was a bit less, the 7.9 percent rise in orders for 2006 is still impressive, especially in the face of rising fuel costs. To put it another way, there are currently 81,852 feet -- or 15.5 miles -- of yachts either contracted or under construction around the world. That's a lot of boat.

According the the International Herald Tribune, not only did the pirates duplicate versions of real NEC devices -- which, according to NEC, were "of generally good quality" -- they actually began producing their own line of NEC-branded products, developed with R&D commissioned by NEC business card-carrying "executives."

The master of text-based search is looking to lend a lend a voice to Internet users everywhere, or so it appears based on Google's latest patent. Patent #7,027,987 issued today by the US Patent and Trademark Office covers a "Voice interface for a search engine," which is described as: "A system provides search results from a voice search query. The system receives a voice search query from a user, derives one or more recognition hypotheses, each being associated with a weight, from the voice search query, and constructs a weighted boolean query using the recognition hypotheses. The system then provides the weighted boolean query to a search system and provides the results of the search system to a user."

On March 12, 2006, Doyle contacted a 14-year-old girl whose profile was posted on the Internet, and initiated a sexually explicit conversation with her. The girl was actually an undercover Polk County Sheriff s Computer Crimes detective. Doyle knew that the girl was 14 years old, and he told her who he was and that he worked for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. During future online chats, Doyle gave the undercover detective posing as a 14-year-old girl his office phone number and his government-issued cell phone number, so that they could have telephone conversations, in addition to their online chatting. Doyle used the Internet to send hard-core pornographic movie clips to the girl and used the AOL Instant Messenger chat service to have explicit sexual conversations with her. The investigation revealed that the phone numbers given to the detective were in fact Doyle s, and that the AOL account used was registered to Doyle. Doyle also sent photos of himself to the detective, which were not sexually explicit but did serve to further positively identify him.

When Microsoft went public in 1986, there was no 3-D videogaming, no enterprise software, and no Google. Two decades and $285 billion in market cap later, CEO Steve Ballmer is facing a stagnant stock price and more competition than ever. His strategy? Take the offensive," Telis Demos reports for Fortune. "Microsoft is about to roll out new versions of Windows and Office." Demos spoke Ballmer, whom he inexplicably describes as "affable" about Sony's troubles mean for the Xbox 360 game system, the future of advertising and why his kids shun iPods. Demos: Do you have an iPod? Ballmer: No, I do not. Nor do my children. My children--in many dimensions they're as poorly behaved as many other children, but at least on this dimension I've got my kids brainwashed: You don't use Google, and you don't use an iPod.

When standing at the rail of the observation deck of the Sears Tower– one of the tallest buildings in the world– many visitors experience some degree of vertigo at the brink of the sheer, 1,353 foot drop-off. This is a natural response as the body's self-defense system reminds its owner of the dangers of gravity. If you're not fond of heights, a new construction project underway in Arizona will probably cause that self-defense mechanism to chew its way out of your body and flee for safety. It's called the Grand Canyon Skyway, and it dabbles in altitudes which dwarf that of the Sears Tower. The horseshoe-shaped walkway, scheduled to open later this year, will jut out seventy feet off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, suspending its occupants about 4,000 feet above the ground (about thrice the height of the Sears Tower) as they stand on a glass floor, looking down. The walkway's walls will be comprised of the same four-inch-thick glass as the floor, which will leave the spectacular view relatively unobstructed, even for those people who opt to remain on all fours.

Ipifini's Programmable Liquid Container technology employs buttons on the container's surface that release additives (flavors, colors, fragrances) into the liquid. Additive buttons allow for the consumer to choose variations of the liquid in the container at the point of consumption. For example, a programmable cola bottle with buttons for lemon, lime, vanilla, and cherry flavors as well as a caffeine button allows for thirty-two potential choices of soda. A programmable paint container with twenty pigment additive buttons allows the consumer to choose from one million colors

We have updated the imagery database tonight. You'll need to restart Google Earth to see it, but no new software is needed. Although updating to the latest is always a good idea. We now have almost all of Germany covered in high-resolution, plus some really high resolution insets in cities like Berlin, Dortmund, and Frankfurt. Also we are now using TruEarth for our 15 meter basemap of the world.

The superrich are responsible for firing the imaginations of car lovers everywhere. The world's 10 most expensive automobiles include such dreams-come-true as a street-legal, 10-cylinder Porsche race car (the Carrera GT) and cars with over 1,000 hp each ( Bugatti's Veyron 16.4 and SSC's Ultimate Aero). These kinds of cars make Ferraris and Aston Martins look like relative bargains; despite their fame, they are much cheaper than the cars on our list. Of the 10 most expensive cars, only two are made by brands with household names -- Porsche and Mercedes-Benz -- although I guess it depends on what your household is like.

Talk about thieves running out of items to steal... this winter thieves cut down and carted away 136 street lights in Baltimore, Maryland. As a result, the city decided that the city's surveillance cameras needed to be suped up. Five $5,000 solar-powered digital surveillance cameras were purchased. These new cams shout when they sense motion nearby, "Stop! We have just taken your photograph. We will use this photograph to prosecute you. Leave the area now!" Yes, so beware of the street lights from now on.

With Google making a big push to move into the mobile space, the company has been looking into what people are searching for on their mobile phones. Turns out, indeed, it's all about sex. Mobile phone searchers are much more likely to be hunting down porn than desktop surfers. In fact, 20% of all mobile search queries are for adult content vs. 8.5% on the desktop (which, by the way, inadvertently lets slip the percentage of porn searches on Google that Larry Page tried not to reveal to Time Magazine just recently).

The Netherlands has issued a lenticular “video” stamp, using a special printing process on a stamp-sized piece of plastic. Each stamp sells for €.39 (46 cents US), and before you think that’s crazy, keep in mind that these are not flat panel displays that we’re talking about. How does this work, you might ask? The technique is a variation on those little plastic decoder rings you might have seen as a kid—as you tilt the stamp to the left and right, the series of images appear to play back in sequence.

It's a question that has taxed generations of the finest minds in physics: do humans swim slower in syrup than in water? And since you ask, the answer's no. Scientists have filled a swimming pool with a syrupy mixture and proved it. "What appealed was the bizarreness of the idea," says Edward Cussler of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, who led the experiment. It's a question that also fascinated his student Brian Gettelfinger, a competitive swimmer who narrowly missed out on a place at this summer's Olympic Games in Athens. Cussler and Gettelfinger took more than 300 kilograms of guar gum, an edible thickening agent found in salad dressings, ice cream and shampoo, and dumped it into a 25-metre swimming pool, creating a gloopy liquid twice as thick as water. "It looked like snot," says Cussler.

Sleep researchers at the Loughborough University in Britain did several tests on fatigued drivers to compare the effects of different methods for a driver can use to stay awake. Here's a question for you: what have the Nazi wartime test facility at Peenemunde and the Australian city of Perth got in common? Well, the first thing (and just about the only thing, truth be told) which springs to mind is that they are both next to large bodies of water.

The brash newcomer vs. the reigning champ, an intriguing matchup.
